Variation Management in Project-Based Design

A Contribution to a Product Portfolio Manager’s Toolbox

This study focuses on the limited reuse of R&D resources in Engineer-to-Order (ETO) companies operating with generally defined product-principles and one-of-a-kind designs. The study investigates the gain of designing customer-specific products from defined and aligned process and product platforms, governed by strict architectures and systems definitions.

Top-Down Financially Driven Modularization

This thesis presents methods to support industrial companies in applying modularization, on a portfolio level, as a strategy for product and production development. This includes a focus on how argumentation for modularization can be supported by assessing financial effects and a focus on how critical modularization decisions can be captured and communicated to support the realization of these effects.

Application of Product Configuration Systems

In Engineering Companies

Engineering companies increasingly face the challenge of delivering highly customized products where time, cost, and quality are critical factors. To provide customized products efficiently, a product configuration system (PCS) is commonly implemented. This study focuses on engineering companies and aims to strengthen the research field of PCS applications and increase the successfulness of engineering companies in applying the PCS in terms of both successful implementation and benefits realization to greater extent.

PLM support to architecture based development

Contribution to computer-supported architecture modelling

Designers doing product architecture based development look to convert desired behavior to solutions for a portfolio of products, and through modularization pursue commonality among different variants without increasing the internal task proportional to handling variety. This study describes research into the phenomena of developing products based on architectures and how to represent architectures in computer systems.

Architecture Descriptions

A Contribution to Modeling of Production System Architecture

This research contributes to the vocabulary and understanding of the architecture phenomenon. A conceptual framework is provided which allows for conceptualization of the architecture phenomenon, and how it applies within production system design. To aid the companies in the operational design and handling of production system architecture, research is conducted into the description of production system architecture, including what an architecture description contains in general and what it should describe for production systems specifically.

On the identification of architectures for product programs

In a complexity cost perspective

The topic of this study is the identification of architectures for product programs with the purpose of improving the competitiveness of industrial companies while reducing complexity. The presented frameworks and approaches have been tested in a number of case studies across a variety of industries demonstrating significant effects in terms of time-to-market reduction, improvement of R&D efficiency, and complexity cost reduction.

Developing product families based on architectures

Contribution to a theory of product families

Companies are introducing more and more product variants to fulfill the market demands. These new variants add complexity to many of the processes and systems in the companies. Reuse of standard designs (i.e. design entities) and re-use of the way new products are developed can simplify the processes and systems. Case studies show that reuse can lead to reduction of cost and time-to-market of new products.
